Big Winter Cleaning

In Japan, there's a tradition to do a big clean up to 

welcome a new year with a clean house.

My husband is replacing a shoji sliding door paper,

which was badly damaged by the 2 white creatures

who are supervising him.

一応「大掃除」しました。

2013年がよい１年でありますように！

Christmas Dinner

As neither of us likes turkey, 

we don't normally have turkey for Christmas.

This year we roasted a duck with Delia Smith's recipe.

It was a success!

（恐らく）日本で過ごす最初で最後のクリスマスは

ローストダックでお祝い。

夫には手作りの帽子、スカーフ、手袋をプレゼント。

夫からのプレゼントはバーゲン時期までお預け（笑）。

 

Presents for the Doggies

Little gifts from Ireland for the doggies.

They are from a couple who I used to teach Japanese in Dublin.

Very touching.

ダブリンで日本語を教えていたご夫婦から、

犬達にプレゼントが届いてビックリ！

ありがとうございます。

やはり私は幸せものです。

A Day Out in Town

I don't go to town very often, only a few times a month.

Sometimes I work and when that happens,
the dogs have to stay at home almost all day, 

and I don't want to leave the dogs alone

in the house for a long time too often.

But there are times I have to go out to town, 

and today was one of those days.

First I went to Umeda to buy a baking mould (with no success).

But I saw a lovely display of white animals at Hankyu Department Store.

我が家の犬達が参加しても違和感なさそう。

Then I met up with my husband for lunch near his office.

On our way to the restaurant, we were asked to take part in

a free lottery by turning a drum (garagara kuji). 

We won a vanilla scented hand cream.

バニラの香りのハンドクリームが当たった。

Then we had lunch at Santa Lucia.

It was really tasty!

その後夫は仕事に戻り、

私は心斎橋の東急ハンズで焼き型を買い、

そして全身と顔のマッサージをしてから帰宅。

Of course, I had taken the dogs out before I went out.

But that doesn't mean they were very happy when I left....

Sorry dogs, but I need a day like this occasionally.

出かける前には犬達を散歩に連れて行った。

あちらでは晴れた冬の日というのが少ないので、

いくら寒くても太陽が出ているだけで嬉しくなってしまう。

それにしても、20年近く大阪を離れていた者には、

今の梅田は豹変しすぎていてついて行けない...。

JR大阪三越伊勢丹にもまだ行ったことないし、

西梅田周辺は昔の面影は殆どない。

Treats (OYATSU)

My husband, who was briefly in Dublin, 

came back to Osaka today

with a lot of very bad things :-))

The 2nd photo shows a beautiful Christmas cake,

which we received from his stepmother.

He brought NOTHING back for the dogs,

so I gave them a steamed sweet potato as a treat.

弾丸帰国していた夫が

私が頼んでいたチョコレート、雑誌、ブレッドミックス、

そして義継母から戴いたとてもキレイなクリスマスケーキと共に

日本に戻って来た。

日本に住み始めて二人ともそれぞれ体重が3キロ減ったんだけど、

これで元に戻りそうだ。

いずれにしても、ありがとう、夫。

Getting Closer? 2

This time it happened naturally (hurrah!), 

but there's subtle tension between them, 

and neither looks comfortable....

Still, we're heading in the right direction :-))

時々思い出したように、

尻尾ふりふりしながら追いかけ合ったり

してるんだけどなー。

人間の愛情を巡ったライバル関係なんだな...。

Royal Spitz

Japanese spitz was very very popular in Japan in the 1950's.
But they are not popular or common any more, 

and they are a rather rare breed these days.

When I take the dogs out for a walk,
very often I get talked to by middle aged people

 who feel nostalgic about the dog.

This is a photo which shows 

even the royals loved Japanese spitz.
The two girls are
Princess Aisin-Gioro Huisheng and 

her younger sister Aisin-Gioro Yunsheng, 

who were the nieces of the Last Emperor Puyi, 

together with their Japanese mother ‪Hiro Saga‬, 

and their pet Japanese spitz dogs.

Christmas Lights

Believe it or not, 

this is a day care centre for elderly people.

I think it's fantastic.

The staff of this centre work so hard to 

keep the place looking very nice.

The tidy garden is always full of flowers.

散歩の時にたまに見かける

お年寄りのためのデイケアセンター。

昼間はスタッフが庭を手入れしているのをよく見かける。

先日夜に通りかかったら、

とってもクリスマスのイルミネーションがキレイだった。

Stitch Markers for Crocheting

I can find a lot of nice stitch markers for knitting, 

but it's almost impossible to find a nice stitch marker for crocheting 

in Japan.

So, I went to a 100 yen shop 

(this is like a "Pound Shop" or a "2 Euro Shop"),

and bought some materials and made them.

What I used was, materials for making straps and earrings.

 I think this idea went quite well.

何処探してもかぎ針編み用の

所謂「目数えリング」が見つからないので

100円ショップに行って材料揃えて来て

自分で作ってみた。

結構行けてると思うぞ。

日本風のデザインの物を選んだので、

アイルランドの編み物の先生に

クリスマスカードと一緒に送るつもり。

The Hobbit

I won the invitation to the preview of the film "The Hobbits"!

I'm so looking forward to this,

as I really liked "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy,

and I must confess I kind of fancy Martin Freeman

(who plays Bilbo Baggins)

since I first saw him as Tim in "The Office".

映画「ホビット」の試写会当たった！

日本に来てまだ1回も映画見に行ってない。

この日は仕事があるからちょっと忙しいから、

犬達にはお留守番時間が長くなってゴメンね。

マーティン・フリーマンは舞台挨拶に来ないだろうな（苦笑）。

Ooizumi Park in December

The Christmas season has started,

and the park is decorated with 

many Christmasy ornaments.

I'm impressed with the park staff's hard work.

The 2nd photo shows 

the dogs angry with stray cats in the park,

and a nosy walker who wanted to know

why the dogs were looking down there :-))

これは今年のクリスマスカード用の写真にぴったり！と

クリスマス用の装飾の前で犬達の写真撮ったのに

カメラのモードを使い間違った様で

ちゃんとキレイに撮れなかったのが残念！

２枚目の写真は、

公園の野良猫に興奮する犬達と

それを見て「何だ何だ？」と一緒に覗き込む

ウォーキング中の男性。

Yet Again

November is coming to an end,

but the landscape still retains a lot of autumn flavour.

しつこいけど、

日本の秋が本当に好きだ。

それにしても犬達のツーショットは、

どうしていつもミッフィー（左）シロー（右）

になるんだろう。

Gujohachiman Castle, Gifu

Dropped by Gujohachiman Castle 

on our way home to Osaka.

I can't get over how beautiful Japanese red maple leaves are,

and I can't help taking photos every time I see them.

本当は世界遺産の白川郷に行く予定だったが、

物凄い渋滞に巻き込まれ断念。

その代わりに郡上八幡城に行った。

イベントがあったようで、

戦国時代のコスチュームを来たスタッフに

シローもミッフィーも怯えていた（笑）。

Hida Takayama

We are having a wonderful holiday in Hida Takayama in Gifu Prefecture.
There are so many places to see, so we had to make difficult choices.
One of the places we chose to go to 

(and lot of other people do not choose to go to) 

is Shiroyama Koen.
It turned out to be a very good choice.
We saw beautiful maple trees and a wild serow!

連休を利用して飛騨高山に来た。
寒い国から帰省してたので、
大阪より寒いところには行きたくないという理由で、
今まで飛騨高山には来たことがなかった。
でも飛騨牛をはじめ、
食べ物は美味しいし本当に来てよかった！
その上、野生のカモシカまで見れたし。

Noro Yarn Winter Project

Made a shawl, a hat, a neck warmer 

and a pair of gloves with

Noro yarn yuzen.

Miffy is an unreluctant model.

野呂英作の毛糸は色使いが私の好み。

あちらで通ってた編み物のクラスでも

大人気の毛糸でした。

でも日本人デザインの毛糸なのに

日本の方がお値段が高いのにはビックリ。

Ooizumi Park

It was a lovely warm November day, 

so I took the dogs to Ooizumi Park.

I would be wearing a winter coat and a jumper in Ireland.

今の気候が1番好き。

日本の秋は本当に美しい。

公園を散歩する度に実感します。

Daiitoku-ji, Ushitakiyama, Kishiwada

Drove to Ushitakiyama in Kishiwada City to see

the red maple leaves in Daiitoku Temple.

Red leaves are beautiful, but 

orange maples just before turning red are

also wonderful.

来年の今頃はもう見れないと思うと切ないけど、

この刹那性がまたいいのかもな〜。

Pigeon Biscuits and Real Dogs (?)

Lovely gifts from a friend from Yokohama.

The key rings are not really real dogs, though.

横浜からわざわざ友人が遊びに来てくれました。

それだけでもありがたいのに、

和菓子が苦手な私に気遣って

鳩サブレー、原田のガトーラスク「グーテ･デ･ロワ」、

崎陽軒のシューマイ、

そしてそして日本スピッツのストラップまで

戴いてしまいました。

感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。

私は幸せものです。

Coffee

Surprisingly coffee is a lot nicer in Japan.

And more types are available.

写真は大阪の味コーヒー・ミナミブレンド。

実はキタブレンドの方が美味しかった。

Golden Ginkgo Leaves

Some ginkgo leaves have started

to turn gold.

日本の秋はやはり美しい。

早くも真っ赤な紅葉も見たいな〜。

Parcel

Unexpectedly received a parcel from a friend in Ireland.

The contents are great (I love Crabtree & Evelyn goods & Barry's Tea!), 

but, most of all, the fact that she used her time and effort to

send these to me is very, very moving.

I am incredibly lucky.

日本は大概のものは美味しいけど、

紅茶（とじゃがいも）はアイルランドの方が

ずーーーーっと美味しい。

Barry's Teaは嬉し過ぎ。

Yさんありがとうございまーす。

Buying Flowers

散歩中に偶然見つけたお花屋さんで、

玄関の前に飾る花を購入。

幸せー。

Beautiful Autumn Day

I just love Japanese autumn.  Just like nice dry Irish summer :-p

日本の秋が大好き。今年は猛暑が長く続いた後にすぐに寒くなったので秋が殆どなかったみたいだけど。
